DALLAS (WBAP & KLIF News) — A new bill has been filed to the Texas legislature that could help alleviate the backlog of untested rape kits.
State Representative Victoria Neave filed House Bill 1729 and says if passed, a section would be added to a form when you renew your driver license that would ask you to donate money.
“It would be a little box you can check where you can donate a dollar or any amount that able that would go to sexual assault testing,” Neave said.
She says statewide, there are thousands of untested rape kits, saying one Texas lab alone has around 19,000 on file. The problem, she says, is that there’s not nearly enough money to test the kits — a dilemma she believes could be helped by her bill.
“When [women] have the courage and step up and report the crime and undergo an invasive rape kit, my view is that the least we can do is get those tested,” Neave said.
