ROWLETT (WBAP/KLIF News) – More than a dozen restaurants in Rowlett will donate a portion of their earnings Thursday night to help raise money for families who are still struggling in the aftermath of the deadly 2015 tornadoes.
Rowlett Strong President Steve Walker said the Tornado Relief Fund is empty and there are still families struggling to pay for everyday living expenses.
“They have so little extra money. They have bare rooms, very little furniture in some cases. It’s hard to even keep the food in the cupboards and the toilet paper and paper towels stocked. The relief center that was in Rowlett is closed now. There are still churches that are helping,” he said.
Although there a lot of residents that were able to move back into their homes, Walker said that many have not due to battles with their insurance companies along with the other pitfalls of rebuilding a home.
“We’ve got a lot of residents who have had to deal with crooked contractors and have lot of money that way. We’ve got residents that have had their building materials that were bought and paid for by their insurance companies and delivered to their home site that have been stolen.”
Walker said that the fundraiser is any easy way for people to support the tornado victims whose lives are still not back to normal.
“Think about the people that you know that were affected by that tornado and even if they’re back in their homes now…realize that some are not and they still need help. These are our friends and our neighbors,” he said.
The participating restaurants are listed below. Walker said that if you can’t eat at one of the locations tomorrow night you can contact the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce and inquire about donating through Paypal. He said you can also make a donation at www.RebuildRowlett5K.itsyourrace.com.
