Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – Since the election, many North Texas minority activist groups expressed concern about what a “Trump Presidency” will be like.
The Dallas Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s President Arthur Fleming said he’s waiting until things settle down to assess the nation’s political landscape but is certain of a shift in the relationship between African Americans and Democrats.
He said Donald Trump’s win caused a rift moving forward because of key issues Democrats ignored during the election.
“The Democrats took all these other issues seriously during the election but they didn’t take voter suppression seriously. Then, when it comes time to vote they say…where are you at? Obama got 92 – 93 percent, Clinton got 88 percent or whatever it is,” said Fleming.
He said he hopes Democrats will take the issue of voter suppression seriously now that they’ve seen the consequences of ignoring it and hopes the party will do better in the future.
Fleming said he’s completely against what he calls Trump’s controversial comments but does hope Trump creates the jobs he promised the American Public.
“If we get jobs and good policing, I think our community can pretty much straighten itself out. You got to remove the red lines. Let our communities have some entrepreneur opportunities. If he’ll do that, then we’ll probably change our minds about him a little bit,” said Fleming.
He said at the end of the day, everyone has to work together and the NAACP will continue to fight for civil rights as it has always done no matter who is president.
