Parents Need to Set the Example for Teen Drivers

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – Driving too fast, talking and texting on cellphones, talking with friends…all are leading causes of teen driving crashes.  Doug Shupe of AAA Texas says those are the findings of driving instructors in a recent study.

“What they found was, among the top 3 deadly mistakes made by teen drivers are, number one, poor visual scanning,” said Shupe.  “Number two, speeding, and then number three, distraction.”

Shupe said parents should set a good example for their kids while driving, by not doing any of those things.  He also said it’s important for parents to set aside time to help coach their kids when it’s time for them to start learning.  Texas law requires 30 hours of road training before a kid can get his or her full Driver License, but Shupe said you don’t have to stop at 30…if your kid needs more training, set aside time to help.

AAA is hosting a teen driving fair from 1:00-4:00 Saturday afternoon at the Lively Pointe Youth Center in Irving.  It’ll feature driving simulators, crash test dummies and more.  They event is free, and Shupe says if you have teens who are about to start driving, or even pre-teens who still have a few years, the event is for you.
