Supreme Court allows Trump to restart swift deportation of migrants away from their home countries

WBAP/ASSOCIATED PRESS – (WBAP/KLIF) – A divided Supreme Court on Monday allowed the Trump administration to restart swift removals of migrants to countries other than their homelands, as President Donald Trump continues his sweeping immigration crackdown that has sparked widespread protests, high-profile detentions and various court challenges.

The Supreme Court’s action lifts for now a court order requiring migrants get a chance to challenge the deportations.

All three liberal justices dissented, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor writing that the court’s action exposes “ thousands to the risk of torture or death.”

The Trump administration reports 8 deported migrants being held for weeks under U.S. supervision for weeks in Djbouti, Africa, destined for South Sudan but pausing the movement following a federal court order to maintain oversight as migrant destinations and use of third countries moved through legal channels.

The administration argued some nations would not accept their citizens deported from the United States. Yet the White House says the men in this case are from Mexico, Cuba, Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos. They will likely now be taken to and released into South Sudan, a country gripped in civil turmoil.
