School District in North Texas Considers Closing 4 Schools, Citing Potential Savings

The proposal will be voted on by the school board on March 6.

CARROLLTON, Texas — The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District is proposing the closure of four schools at the end of this academic year as part of a consolidation effort.

The schools recommended for closure include Central Elementary, Furneaux Elementary, McCoy Elementary, and Long Middle School, according to a district press release issued Thursday.

The school board will vote on the proposal at its upcoming meeting on March 6.

“We recognize that these recommendations may be difficult for many of our students, staff, and families to accept,” said Superintendent Dr. Wendy Eldredge in the release. “While this has been a challenging process, we are confident that with the strength, passion, love, and support of our CFB Family, we will get through it together.”

The district estimates the closures will save up to $9 million in the first year and will also reduce over 2,300 vacant seats across the district.

In addition to the school closures, the proposal includes the potential for new attendance zones, the first change in over 20 years.

“If approved, most campuses will experience changes to their attendance zones, though most students are expected to remain at their current school,” the release stated.

The district is exploring using the Furneaux Elementary property as a potential Pre-K center, while the Central and Long properties could be repurposed for temporary classrooms. The McCoy property is expected to be sold, according to officials.
