(WBAP/KLIF) — Residents of South Dallas are getting something they haven’t had in 20 years. The Dallas City Council announced that a Tom Thumb grocery store is coming to Redbird in 2025.

There’s usually not a lot of buzz about a new grocery store opening in DFW, however announcement of a one in South Dallas is making waves. That’s because the Redbird area of the city has been starving for economic growth. City Councilman Tennell Atkins says the decision by Albertson’s, the parent company of Tom Thumb, to build a 50,000 square foot store is huge.

Wes Jackson with Albertson’s says they chose South Dallas for the $10-million project based on a couple of factors that included being able to move into a brand new 50,000 square foot building and the city picking up $5.8 million of the cost were enough for Tom Thumb to sign a 15-year lease.
Atkins says the reason a grocery store is such a big announcement for the community is defined by one word….Hope. Construction is slated to begin in the middle of 2024.
