DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A poisonous plant has been found growing around White Rock Lake, prompting the Dallas Parks and Recreation Department to warn residents to avoid it.

Water Hemlock is highly toxic, can cause a skin reaction upon touch and is fatal if ingested. Symptoms can appear within 10 minutes of coming into contact with the plant.

The department’s urban biologist Brett Johnson said water hemlock is deceptively beautiful.

“It’s about a foot-and-a-half tall to about four-foot tall and it’s a pretty looking plant which is actually one of our concerns. It’s got a king of a umbrella-shaped head with multiple little white and yellow flowers,” he said.

The department will be using the herbicide Rodeo, also known as glyphosate, to kill the plant during an emergency application on Friday.

“We’re trying to be as environmentally sensitive about our removal as possible while also making sure we balance the safety concerns of the citizens,” said Johnson.

They’ll also monitor the situation over the next few weeks.
