PLANO (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The American Red Cross Greater North Texas is hosting a blood drive Tuesday, July 5, to help keep the flow of supply in and out of its coffers steady.
Brian Murnahan is the non-profit’s regional director and said the donations are vital in trauma cases, which are typically higher in the summer months.
“It can be a car accident. It can be any sort of things that creates trauma. So, where there’s a lot of people that need that blood right away. We want to have that blood on hand. O negative blood is the universal blood and is the one that we’re always seeking the most because it takes care of those complications,” he said.

This particular drive is in honor of Allen Free.
A beloved 64-year-old North Texan and radio industry veteran who succumbed from complications from a heart attack on May 13, 2022 but who was able to live a little longer thanks to vital blood transfusions.
His daughter Kasia Birdwell said partnered with the American Red Cross Greater North Texas because she wanted to give back.
“During his time in the hospital, he actually received over 70 units of blood in order to save his life. So, being able to host a drive to collect blood in order to replenish what we’ve used is just a small token of what we can do to give back to our community and to give back for what was able to save my dad’s life and give me the time that I did have with him,” she said.
The drive is being held at Chase Oaks Church in Plano at 201 Legacy Drive. It’s ends at 3 p.m..
