Airbnb Makes Party Ban Permanent

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Airbnb is making its once temporary ban on parties and events at its properties permanent.

The home rental service said there’s a direct correlation between a 44% drop in complaints about parties globally since the temporary measure was enacted in August 0f 2020.

Brent Breit is with the company’s public affairs department and said the policy had a major impact in Texas.

“We’ve seen a 46% year over year drop in party reports in Texas. So, that is a trend that we are very happy about,” he said.

Airbnb said the overwhelming majority of complaints about parites involve hosts who did not know their homes were being used improperly.

Dallas has had some issues when it comes to renters throwing parties in the host’s property. In May, Dallas City Council discussed considering stricter rules for short-term rental owners and a new registration system to address complaints from long-term residents.

The council reviewed data that showed since October 2020, 112 complaints at 69 locations were received regarding short-term rentals in Dallas. City council said it could take months to develop recommendations.

However, Breit gave the city overall a positive review.

“The great majority of our hosts in Dallas are very respectful of their neighbors. They want guests who are coming for the right reasons who are going to in turn be respectful to those neighbors as well. So this is definitely in part of supporting those hosts,” he said.

Anyone caught violating the policies will face punishment which range in degree.

“It can start with a suspension and can end with permanent removal from our platform and there have been instances where we’ve even gone further and taken permanent legal action against certain guests who have thrown particularly bad unauthorized parties. We’ve done that in Dallas,” said Breit.

Airbnb is implementing other strict anti-party measures during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

Anyone with a history of negative reviews will be banned from one-night rentals nationwide.
