Governor Greg Abbott Requests Special Legislative Committees In the Wake of Uvalde School Shooting

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News ) – As the Uvalde community begins the harrowing process of recovery in the wake of the school shooting at Robb Elementary that left 19 students and two teachers dead, state lawmakers are looking at ways to prevent a similar attack.

On Wednesday, Governor Greg Abbott sent a joint letter to Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Speaker Dade Phelan requesting state lawmakers convene special legislative committees that would “examine and develop legislative recommendations on school safety, mental health, social media, police training, firearm safety and more.”

The Governor said state leaders must reassess the issues of school safety and mass violence. “As leaders, we must come together at this time to provide solutions to protect all Texans. Accordingly, I hereby request that each of you convene a special legislative committee. I look forward to working with you both on this important mission to make Texas safer and, and I stand ready to provide any and all support,” said Abbott.

State Representative Matt Shaheen said there’s a sense of urgency among lawmakers in the wake of the tragedy.

“I am taking a look at all the school safety legislation that we passed last session. We’re looking at how we can better leverage social media artificial intelligence to be more proactive. We’re looking at indigent health care and mental health care,” he said.
