McConaughey posted a video indicating that political leadership was not a route he was choosing to take “at this moment” in his life. He said he would instead focus on supporting businesses and foundations which are creating pathways for others to succeed. Meanwhile, the Texas governor’s race is shaping up to be one of the nation’s highest-profile contests in 2022.

Republican Governor Greg Abbott is seeking a third term, while Democrat Beto O’Rourke, who is coming off failed bids for the U.S. senate and president, recently announced that he was entering the race.

The 52-year-old Academy Award-winning actor made the announcement to not enter the race in an online video.
