Blood Centers Nation-wide Facing All Time Low Blood Supply

BEDFORD (WBAP/KLIF)- Hospitals all over the U.S. are scrambling to get blood supply as donor sites face all time low blood shortages.

Linda Goelzer with Carter BloodCare says it’s the lowest levels they’ve ever seen in DFW.

“Some people in the industry are calling it a 30-year low because they’ve never seen such shortages like this before,” said Goelzer.

Before Covid-19 shutdowns, schools accounted for 25% of collected blood. now, demand for blood products is up 10% nationwide.

Goelzer said with the pandemic, the ice storms shutting down facilities and now with school out for summer, it’s a perfect storm for disaster.

“This is a season of lows in the blood industry, summers are always challenging but when you take that after a 15-month blood shortage that makes it much for challenging,” she said.

Goelzer hopes the supply will pick back up in the Fall but she encourages North Texans to donate blood as soon as possible.

“Blood is essential for most major medical care and the only way to get that blood is through generous humans who are willing to roll up their sleeves to help someone else,” she said.
