WESLACO (WBAP/KLIF) – Former President Donald Trump joined Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and other Republican state leaders, for a border security briefing in the Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday.
The former President’s trip comes as Governor Abbott pledges to complete the construction of a wall along the Texas-Mexico border. As of Wednesday, donations for that wall had surpassed $600,000. The state allocated $250,000 for the construction.
Trump touted his work on immigration as President, and blamed Biden administration policies on the current surge of migrants at the southern border.
“Within a period of a few months it was all dissipated,” said Trump. “Remain in Mexico was so important. Catch and Release, we broke that one. Chain migration, where people come in and then bring everyone else in with them. We did a hell of a job.”
Trump voiced support for the Texas wall.
“The two things that will never get old are a wheel and a wall,” Trump said. “When you get right down to it, the wall really worked.”
The former President bashed the current state of U.S. elections, as well as the current condition at the border. He said that if America doesn’t improve its border or its elections, it will become a banana republic.
Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn took part in the briefing. He also toured the border Governor and former President.
“I want to thank [President Trump] for coming here to put a light on this and broaden it so the rest of America sees what we’re going through,” Sheriff Waybourn said. “Because it is affecting the nation.”
Sheriff Waybourn told Trump that drug smuggling brought on by migrant surges are leading to an uptick in drug overdoses north of the border.
Several former Trump administration officials made the trip with him, including former acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, and former acting Customs and Border Protection head Mark Morgan.
