WASHINGTON, D.C. (WBAP/KLIF) – Democratic members of the Texas Legislature are in Washington, D.C. this week to meet with Congressional leaders, Senate leaders and Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss their successful attempt to temporarily block Republican-led voting legislation in Texas.
Some of the Texas Democrats who killed the voting bill by walking out of the House Chamber will attend the Washington meetings. State Senator Royce West will be there too and said Monday that it’s important to continue a dialogue with the White House, as he encourages the passage of Federal legislation that enhances voting access.
“We need to figure out how to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and H.R. 1,” Senator West insisted.
Democrats argue that Republican voting measures discriminate against communities of color and suppress the vote. But, Republicans contend that limiting voting access would help restore election integrity.
“We have seen firsthand how Republicans are pulling every lever of power to keep voters right where they want them – silenced, marginalized, and afraid,” said Texas State Representative Trey Martinez Fischer, “There is no question, democracy is in jeopardy, and we are living proof of that. We are on Capitol Hill today to push Congress to cowboy up.”
The Texas lawmakers planned to meet with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Members and Offices of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday. The meeting with Vice President Harris is set for Wednesday.
