Van Horn (WBAP/KLIF) – 60 years ago on May 5,1961 Alan Shepard became the first American to fly a rocket into space. Multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos has picked the anniversary to begin selling tickets for tourist-type adventure rides into space aboard his Blue Origin company rocket which he has named “New Shepard.” The start of ticket sales does not necessarily mean the first paid flights will leave Earth anytime soon, but when they do those flights are to be launched from Blue Origin’s own launch complex near the west Texas town of Van Horn.
