Texas Senate Moves Police Reform Bills Forward

(WFAA)

Texas (WBAP/KLIF) – The Texas Senate took steps toward police reforms in the state. One bill passed Thursday would require officers to step up if they see unreasonable force being used.

Democratic Sen. Borris Miles of Houston filed the bill in response to the George Floyd case. Texas police unions and criminal justice advocates support it.

Another bill proposed by North Texas Senator Royce West requires officers to immediately seek medical assistance or provide it themselves for anyone who is injured.

The more far-reaching George Floyd Act has stalled out in both the House and Senate.  A provision that would remove police officers’ legal shield against civil lawsuits is considered a major sticking point.
