Denton, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – Denton Police Chief Frank Dixon has asked the FBI-Dallas to conduct an independent review of the facts in the police shooting death of UNT student Darius Tarver last year.
The 23-year old Tarver was shot on Jan. 21, 2020, after residents at an apartment complex reported a man smashing light fixtures and banging on doors.
On the night of the incident Tarver was tased multiple times before being fatally shot after ignoring commands to drop the items.
Dixon said that the review was being done as part of the department’s commitment to transparency.
The FBI Dallas Division has accepted the request.
The FBI has accepted this request. FBI agents who specialize in evaluating evidence will work alongside the U.S. Attorney’s Office to determine if a federal investigation should be opened. It is a detailed and thorough process.
Denton Mayor Gerand Hudspeth said that while the review will be conducted as expeditiously as possible, it will require patience until its resolution is determined.
A Denton County grand jury declined to indict the officer last month; no officer faced disciplinary action as a result of the incident.
Multiple bodycams captured the incident:
