Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – As Gov. Greg Abbott eyes re-election next year, critics claim that his ramped up rhetoric about drug cartels is an effort to get votes.  During a visit to Mission, Texas along the U-S-Mexico border Abbott gave an update on the surge in migrants crossing the border, and said that drug  cartels are taking advantage of the situation.

Abbott goes on to explain those dangerous elements are sometimes violent criminals and other times immigrants from foreign adversaries of the U-S.

Domingo Garcia, National President of League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), says the majority of people crossing the border are women and children fleeing violence in Central America, not cartel members.

Garcia told also told WFAA that that thousands of refugees have been stuck in tents waiting months for immigration hearings.
