WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump is threatening to veto a long-standing defense bill due to a provision that would rename military bases like Fort Benning that are named after Confederate soldiers.
Republicans have vowed not to send the bill to Trump’s desk unless the provision is removed.
The GOP’s position is facing push back from Democrats and some Republicans.
The bill sets the Pentagon’s policy and puts lawmakers on record behind a 3 percent automatic pay raise starting January 1st and other provisions.
A version of this bill has passed Congress each year since the Kennedy administration.
