KILLEEN (WBAP/KLIF News) – A Fort Hood soldier has been charged with murder in the case of a woman who was found dead in a Killeen Day Inn motel room in July of 2019.
Killeen Police arrested 20-year-old Spc. Cory Grafton this week in connection to the death of 32-year-old Chelsea Cheatham.
An autopsy at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas found that Cheatham’s death was a homicide.
Investigators said a witness had tied Grafton to the scene of the murder and detectives were able to arrest Grafton after the Texas Rangers matched his DNA to evidence found at the crime scene.
Fort Hood said it’s cooperating with Killeen Police and the Texas Rangers.
According to online jail records, Grafton was being held on a $1 million bond.
A federal investigation is underway into Fort Hood after 28 soldiers have died their this year.
The base gained national attention after slain soldier Spc. Vanessa Guillen vanished in April and her body was found buried near the Leon River in June.
Prosecutors said she was killed by a fellow soldier who killed himself as police attempted to arrest him.
Her family said she’d accused him of sexual harassment.
