Laredo (WBAP/KLIF) – U.S. Border Patrol officials say an agent fatally shot a person driving a vehicle as part of a suspected human smuggling operation. Customs and Border Protection says federal and local law enforcement had stopped a semi in Laredo carrying people suspected of being in the country illegally, when another semi drove onto the scene. The statement says the driver of that second semi tried to get away by backing up. He slammed into an agent behind the trailer of his truck, pinning the agent against another vehicle. Other agents opened fire, and the driver of the second semi was shot and killed. The injured Border Patrol agent was treated, and is expected to be OK.
