CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) – Crews continue to try and stem a plume spewing from a natural gas well platform about three miles off the coast of Padre Island.
The efforts have been stymied by rough waters because no one has been able to reach the platform by boat.
Officials said the environmental impact to the shoreline from the plume has been minimal.
However, U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman Hailye Reynolds said there is a light natural gas sheen surrounding the platform.
Nueces County said the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the National Weather Service are monitoring the air but have not reported any significant findings.
According to the Coast Guard, the platform is owned by Houston-based Magellan E&P Holdings Inc.
This is the second incident involving natural gas platforms in the Gulf.
Four people were killed in an explosion that occurred when crews hit a submerged propane pipeline while dredging a vessel in the Port of Corpus Christi last month.
