As Hurricane Laura wreaks havoc on Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast, hundreds of thousands of locals are evacuating.
Texas has several evacuation reception centers set up for people seeking safety, including sites in Mesquite and Ennis.
The Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio areas are all welcoming evacuees with food and water. Tammy Washington and her family left Beaumont ahead of the storm because she’s too familiar with the potential devastation.

“I survived Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Harvey,” she said.
Washington was appreciative of the reception centers.
“Lord yes,” she emphasized. “Because we’re basically homeless right now.”
More than 200,000 hotel rooms are available statewide for evacuees at no cost to avoid opening shelters amid the coronavirus pandemic.
