DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- Dallas schools will be held online only until at least October 6th. Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa says school will begin September 8th but it will be online only for the first four weeks.
“I have the authority as the superintendent of schools, without board approval, to have the first 4 weeks of school online only,” said Hinojosa.
Hinojosa said he made this decision after speaking with medical experts who advised him that it wasn’t safe to host in-person learning as planned September 8th.
“This can alleviate the pressure of our staff members,” he said. “We have done a lot to train our teachers on Zoom and Google Classrooms and we will be ready on September 8th to deliver on that promise.”
As for sports, that’s still up in the air. Hinojosa said there are no football games scheduled until the end of September and workouts are canceled. He said there’s a possibility fall sports won’t happen at all. “It would be disingenuous to say you can’t come to school but it’s okay to come to practice…that’s my decision and i’m going to get a lot of heat for that but I cannot justify making a different decision at this point,” he said.
The board is expected to meet again in 2 weeks to discuss if this needs to be extended through October.
