
Austin (WBAP/KLIF) – The leader of the great state of Texas plans to skip the Republican National Convention later this month to deal with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Governor Greg Abbott announced the news in a letter to National GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
He said that it was an honor being selected to serve as chair of the Texas delegation, but that his “top priority remains focused on protecting the health and safety of Texans.”
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick will take Abbott’s place as chair of the Texas delegation at the scaled down convention in North Carolina august 24-27.
Patrick had already been named vice-chair of the Texas Delegation,

The letter was cc’d to the new Texas Republican Party Chairman, Allen West,Toni Anne Dashiell and Robin Armstrong, Texas’ two RNC members; Deon Starnes, a member of the State Republican Executive Committee; and Adolpho Telles, the chairman of the El Paso County who will also be in attendance at the convention, according to the Texas Tribune.
Governor Abbott was forced to missed the 2016 RNC in Cleveland, OH due to injuries received during a family vacation earlier that year.
