Trump Faces Rare Rebuke From GOP for Floating Election Delay

Washington (WBAP/KLIF) – President Donald Trump is facing a rare rebuke from the Republican Party for floating the possibility of delaying the November election.

Republican officials from New Hampshire to Mississippi to Iowa quickly pushed back against Trump’s repeated suggestion on Thursday that it might be necessary to delay the November election because of the unfounded threat of voter fraud.

Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz all rejected the idea, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Abbott said Texas will hold the election as scheduled on Nov. 3.

Senator Cornyn chalked up trump’s tweet as “mischievousness,” and said, “Obviously he doesn’t have the power to do that.”

Senator Cruz said, “election fraud is a serious problem. we need to fight it and stop it … but no, the election should not be delayed.”

Meantime, Texas Republican Congressman Will Hurd chimed in on ABC News’ FiveThirtyEightPolitics podcast saying:

“We are not an authoritarian government where the head of state gets to decide when the election happens, so no, this is Congress’ role.”

Also during the podcast, Hurd, who is retiring from Congress this year would not commit to casting a vote for Trump this Novembers.

Democrats are worried that President Donald Trump’s escalating rhetoric against mail voting is designed to take advantage of this delay in the instance of a close race or even his defeat.
