(WBAP/KLIF) — A federal court judge has levied a blow to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.  The Texas Republican Party was geared to hold its state convention at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center this weekend. However, a week ago, the Houston mayor shut down the in-person convention over reported fears of COVID-19.

Now, a federal judge has ruled in favor of the GOP and ordered the convention center opened.  Republican Party Chairman James Dickey said he hoped the ruling sets a precedent for other organizations who face a politically motivated shutdown.

The GOP feels vindicated, but not in time to change the format.  Dickey applauded the court for its decision, which made clear that the mayor cannot use pretext to infringe on their right to an in-person convention. he hoped the ruling sets a precedent.

With no time to change the convention’s format, Republicans will continue with the virtual option, but will use the convention center as a last resort.
