Suspect in Disappearance of Fort Hood Soldier Vanessa Guillen Kills Self, One Other in Custody

FORT HOOD  (WBAP/KLIF News) – A suspect wanted in connection with a missing Fort Hood soldier, whose body is believed to have been found, is dead, according to police.

The Killeen Police Department said the man, who is also a soldier, fatally shot himself early Wednesday morning as officers were moving in to make an arrest.

In a statement, police said the man was armed and turned the gun on himself before officers could intervene.

The suspect has not been identified.

The news comes the same day the  Army Criminal Investigation Division announced partial human remains were found near the Leon River in Bell County just east of Killeen Tuesday afternoon during a search for Private First Class Vanessa Guillen .

She vanished April 22nd and was last seen in the parking lot on base.

Before her disappearance, she had reported that she’d been sexually harassed by a superior who walked in her as she showered.

During a press conference Wednesday in Washington D.C., Natalie Khawam, the Guillen family’s attorney, said the suspect who killed himself was allegedly the man who walked in on Vanessa showering.

Khawam said they want legislation passed in honor of Vanessa.

“We want a bill in her name ‘I am Vanessa Guillen” ready to be passed that says you don’t be afraid to report sexual harassment. You report it you need a third party to report it too,” she said.

The reward for information leading to an arrest in Guillen’s case has grown to $50,000 with $25,000 being donated by the Army.

The remains of another missing soldier, Private Gregory Morales, were found outside Fort Hood on June 19th. He’d been scheduled to be discharged days before he vanished.

The Army has not said whether the two cases are connected.
