(WBAP/KLIF) — Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins is criticizing Governor Greg Abbott for not doing enough to protect Texas against the Coronavirus pandemic.
Although the governor moved to shut down bars and restrict restaurant capacity to 50% on Friday, Jenkins believes another 30-day stay-at-home order along with a mandated mask requirement is also necessary.
The COVID-19 positivity test rate has tripled since the end of May, which drove Abbott to reduce the restaurant capacity and re-close bars. However, opponents of another shut-down point to the falling 1.6% statewide mortality rate.
Jenkins is worried that COVID-19 could soon overwhelm local hospitals. The county saw 570 new cases of the virus, Sunday, and Jenkins says there are no signs of slowing. He believes that more federal funding should come through to conduct local lab testing.
As Dallas county has eclipsed 20,000 Coronavirus cases, believes another lock down order would help prevent overwhelming local hospitals, as hospitalizations have doubled in June.
