Austin Area School District Offering $68 Million in Tax Breaks To Reel In Tesla Plant

AUSTIN (AP) – Tesla wants to build an almost 5 million square foot manufacturing facility to the Austin area and a local school district is considering offering about $68  million to close the deal.

According to an application filed Thursday by the Texas Comptroller’s Office, the district would offer the money in property tax breaks over 10 years build on a 2100 acre site in southeastern Austin.

The facility would build Tesla’s electric pickup truck.

Travis County commissioners are considering a separate tax incentive package.

Austin is competing with Tulsa, Oklahoma for the contract.

In May, Tesla had considered moving its headquarters to Texas amid a fight with California’s governor over COVID-19 reopening plans.

Several elected officials, including Governor Greg Abbott and Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson tweeted in support of the possible relocation.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, and California Governor Gavin Newsom ended up working things out.
