DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – The state’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas is having to downsize due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Baylor Scott & White Health announced Tuesday its laying off 1200 employees in addition to furloughs and pay cuts for the remaining staff.

In a statement, the healthcare system said the move is in response to a “drastic drop in visits, largely due to the suspension of non-urgent surgeries and procedures.”

Because of the financial strain the pandemic has placed on Baylor Scott & White, officials were forced to make adjustments across the board.

“We are implementing changes to remain prepared and adapt in continued unpredictability,” the statement said.

In addition to the layoffs, senior executives will have their salaries temporarily reduced and physician compensation models will be modified.

Although the future of this pandemic or its continued impact on the healthcare system is uncertain, Baylor Scott & White said its trying to make decisions with its staff and patients in mind.

“We are committed to supporting these team members’ transitions in every way possible,” according to the statement.

According to its website, Baylor Scott & White Health operates 48 hospitals, 900 patient care sites, with more than 6,000 doctors and 40,000 employees.
