EXCLUSIVE: H-E-B to Bring Subsidiary to East & Southern Dallas; Some Activists Call for a Flagship Store

(WFAA)

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – Targeted for two communities in Dallas over the next two years, H-E-B plans to bring its Joe V’s Smart Shop to East and Southern Dallas. Some Southern Dallas activists balk at the move.

The stores are considered H-E-B’s alternative to Aldi’s, with the promise of the lowest prices in the market on fresh foods.

As H-E-B continues to expand its footprint across DFW, the company announced that [Tuesday] that the first Dallas location will be open by next summer on Wheatland Road near Highway 67. The second location will open by spring 2025 Buckner Blvd near Samuell Boulevard.

In recent years H-E-B has been criticized for opening stores in more affulent areas of the DFW metroplex. James McGee, Board Chair with the Southern Dallas Community Progress Corporation.

James McGee, President, Board Chair (South Dallas Progress)

In an email this morning McGee referred to Joe V’s as a “3rd tier wholesale-ish store.” He added that it is up to the leadership in under-served communities must demand a flagship H-E-B store.

This is essentially a “proof of concept” approach. Surrounding southern Dallas county cities where they’ve invested in land, beware, your next. HEB has let you know what they think of southern Dallas county by the product the present/break ground on. It’s 3rd tier wholesale-ish store.”

Mr. McGee email also wrote, “Joe Av’s has been presented to Grand Prairie, Glenn Heights and DeSoto over the past 8-9 years.”

He said, “It’s up to leadership in these respective cities to demand a flagship HEB store in their communities. Southern Dallas County can support it. Basically, if said leadership is savvy enough that demand is only a phone call (or two) away. It’s sad that Frisco, Little Elm and Plano can have 3 H-E-B stores built before Mansfield. But they are going where rapid pop. growth is steadily climbing….and where retail leakage isn’t prevalent.”
