Family of TAMU Student Killed by DUI Driver Awarded $69M in Damages

Brazos County, TX (WBAP/KLID) – The family of a Texas A&M student who was killed by drunk driver four years ago has been awarded 69-million dollars in damages.

A Brazo County jury determined the settlement against Pedro Puga based on his negligence in the case.

On September 15, 2019 19-year old Carly Beatty was walking with friends near campus when she was hit by the then 20-year Puga of Bryan,TX, who was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Beatty died a week later.

Last February Puga was sentenced to 15-years in prison. at the time of the accident he ran off but was later caught. He pleaded guilty to both the manslaughter, accident involving death charges and evading arrest.

After the verdict, the Beatty family’s attorney said in part, “With its verdict, the jury sent a clear message that this community will not tolerate intoxicated drivers needlessly and recklessly endangering the lives of others.”

The family said, “We are relieved that the perpetrator admitted guilt and will be serving time. We are devastated that our beautiful daughter Carly had her life taken from her at such a young age and is now unable to fulfill her dreams of becoming a veterinarian.”

Beatty’s family has established a non-profit organization her honor called Carly’s Way. Carly was studying to be a veteranarian and the non-profit, according to the website, “Is is an effort to fulfill Carly’s vision for helping unloved animals and to stop intoxicated driving.”
