U.S. State Department Unveils New Refugee Resettlement Program, Texas Expected to Take in Small Percentage

NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The U.S. State Department launched a pilot program this week that will allow groups of private American citizens and permanent residents to financially sponsor the resettlement of refugees fleeing war and violence worldwide.

In the past, refugees were resettled by nine federally-funded non profits.

Under “Welcome Corps” program, groups of at least five United States-based individuals could sponsor refugees if they raise $2,275 per refugee, pass a background check and submit a plan about how they will assist them in resettling.

Applicants who make the cut will assume the role of traditional resettlement agencies for at least 90 days after a refugee’s arrival in the U.S.

Chris Kelly spokesperson with Refugee Services of Texas said the state will see some of the incoming refugees.

“Even nationally, we’re talking about 5,000 refugees. Texas resettles about two to five percent of refugees. So, we can expect several dozen folks,” he said.

Kelley said Texas is actually a popular spot for refugees for numerous reasons.

“Because of the booming economy, the lower generally speaking cost of living, the climate and the general friendliness of the people,” he said.

In a statement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the Welcome Corps program the “boldest innovation in refugee resettlement in four decades.”

“It is designed to strenghten and expand the capacity of the [U.S. refugee program] by harnessing the energy and talents of Americans from all walks of life desiring to serve as private sponsors-ranging from members of faith and civic groups, veterans, diaspora communities, businesses, colleges and universities,” he said.

The U.S. resettlement program, which was deeply slashed during the Trump administration, is one that the Biden Administration said is hoping to expand if and when needed.

Kelley said the news of this pilot program couldn’t have come at a better time, as both the volunteers and the refugees, repeatedly tell him it has had a lasting impact on their lives.

“We here from volunteers all the time how refugees help them understand the need is to help people start their lives with a fresh start. It is the ultimate form of volunteer work because you’re helping folks not only access food, medical services and education but you’re also giving them a sense of safety and security…because manty of these refugees arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs and some trauma to heal from,” he said.
