Mexican Cartel Leader Tied to 2013 Southlake Murder Arrested in Mexico City

SOUTHLAKE (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The alleged mastermind behind the 2013 murder of a drug cartel figure in Southlake is behind bars.

The Mexican Attorney General’s office tweeted Sunday Jose Rodolfo Villareal-Hernandez, known as “El Gato”, was arrested in Mexico City.

Authorities put Villareal-Hernandez on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list for allegedly commissioning the killing of Juan Jesus Gurerrero-Chapa, a Mexican defense attorney was fatally shot in Southlake town square in May of 2013.

Guerrero-Chapa was the attorney for Osiel Cardenes, the former head of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel and a U.S. government informant.

Villareal-Hernandez is charged in a federal indictment with conspiracy to commit murder for hire and interstate stalking.

Authorities arrested his brother in Mexico in 2018 and extradited him to the U.S. in 2020. Ramon Villareal-Hernandez pleaded guilty on charges related to the murder last year.

Three other men who participated in tracking Guerrero-Chapa and his family ahead of the killing have already been convicted.
