(WBAP/KLIF) — Ahead of the 88th Texas Legislature convening on January 10th, a slew of bills have been filed in anticipation of the session. Due to a $27-billion state surplus from property taxes, lawmakers have filed dozens of bills aiming to cut property taxes.

A variety of bills have been filed since November, when lawmakers could begin filing proposed legislation. House Bill 610 drafted by Democrat Representative Richard Peña of Laredo calls for a temporary $360,000 homestead exemption. House Bill 29 submitted by Republican Andrew Murr of Junction calls for the elimination of the school district maintenance and operations tax.
Republican Rep. Mayes Middleton of Wallisville wants to create the “Texas Parental Empowerment Program,” allowing participants to receive state funds for education at private schools. According to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the filing deadline for lawmakers to submit bills is March 10th.
