Holiday Travel, Heating Oil Demand Lead to Spike in Gas Prices

NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The ongoing arctic blast is contributing to a slight increase in gas prices.

AAA Texas reports prices across DFW jumped from $2.64 for a gallon of regular unleaded to $2.69 overnight.

The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.62 for a gallon of regular unleaded, that’s three cents less than on this day last week and 27 cents less per gallon compared to this day last year.

AAA Texas’ Daniel Armbruster said the spike is due to demand for holiday travel and heating oil.

“When we have these huge cold snaps that take over most of the country it can have a little bit of an impact…it really causes crude oil prices to go up…and when you break down the price of gasoline, half of that is the price of crude oil,” he said.

Despite the current bump in prices, the situation is still relatively low than that staggering more than four to almost five dollars a gallon seen over the summer months.

AAA Texas expects the current trends to entice more Texans to take a year-end road trip.

Armbruster said they expect 8.3 million residents to be on the roads.

“Falling gas prices may incentivize even more people than anticipated to make a last-minute decision to travel,” he said. “AAA recommends drivers assess the weather along their route before heading out and that their vehicle is well maintained with a well stocked emergency roadside kit.

According to gasprices.aaa.com, Texans are paying the lowest gas price average nationwide.
