City of Dallas Gives Update on Coyote Management Plan

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Dallas Animal Services updated the city council on its recently created ‘Coyote Management Plan’ months after a violent attack on a two-year-old boy in Lake Highlands.

The city is considering an ordinance to fine people who feed wild animals but Councilman Adam Bazuldua believes residents need more education about urban coyotes.

“I golf often at Tenison. You can drive through Tenison on any regular day and see a coyote. There’s no education there. Never has been,” he said.

Bazaldua suggested placing more signage across city trails and neighborhoods.

“We should be looking at any place that there hasn’t been incidents but we know that there could be. That’s where signage should be. That’s where we should be educating. We shouldn’t be focused on places where we know its existed,” he said.

According to Dallas Animal Services, a new coyote reporting hotline has brought more than 800 calls for coyote sightings and 50 of those are from outside Dallas.

City officials will continue to work towards implementing a feeding ordinance once they’ve got approval from the city’s attorneys and hold another public meeting on the matter.
