North Texas Food Bank Joins Feeding America’s Hunger Action Campaign, Kicks Off Annual Peanut Butter Drive

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – September is Hunger Action Month and the North Texas Food Bank is providing the community with a myriad of ways to donate to food insecure residents.

The organization said hunger needs have currently exceeded the highest levels of demand seen during the pandemic due to inflation.

There are currently almost 700,000 North Texans, including 260,000 kids, who are food insecure.

Erica Yeager, Chief External Affairs Officer at the North Texas Food Bank, said hunger needs have currently exceeded the highest levels of demand seen during the COVID-19 pandemic due to inflation.

She’s hoping for record participation for the Spread the Hope Peanut Butter Drive.

“This year, our goal is to collect over 500,000 pounds of peanut butter both physically and online, though monetary donation, and those jars of peanut butter will be distributed across our service area through 400 different partner agencies and organizations,” he said.

Yeager and other advocates who are in the fight against hunger stress the major impact one jar of peanut butter can have on a child experiencing food insecurity.

“We use the peanut butter not only with our partner agencies but we’re putting jars of peanut butter in our Food for Kids Program backpacks. 11,000 across the Metroplex receive backpacks every Friday with nutritious foods to get them through the weekend,” said Yeager.

The State Fair Food Drive begins on September 30. The North Texas Food Bank is partnering with the State Fair of Texas again this year to collect food donations to help feed a growing population of residents in need. On opening day, visitors can bring two 16-oz jars of peanut butter for a discounted ticket and each Wednesday, patrons who bring five cans of food will get a $5 admission.
