Airline Cancellations Soaring

(WBAP/KLIF) — More than 53,000 flights have been canceled by major airlines in the first half of 2022.

Fort Worth-based American Airlines leads the pack, canceling nearly 4% (3.88%) of its flights so far this year. That compares to 2.8% by all other major carriers, which is a poor metric for industry standards in itself.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is the only major carrier to reduce the number of cancellations in 2022. According to the Dallas Morning News, airlines blame the issue on a variety culprits, including bad weather, less air traffic controllers, and an industry-wide shortage of pilots.
