NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Better Business Bureau is advising North Texans on how to avoid becoming a victim of scams targeting flood victims.

Although some would-be contractors display blatant red flags including those who go door-to-door or who don’t have a license, some tells are harder to detect.

The BBB North Texas’ Monica Horton said one of the things homeowners need to be aware of is any contractor who claims to be an “insurance claim specialist.”

“They may ask you to sign an agreement that will allow them to contact your insurance company and seek approval for repairs. Often times we hear from consumers that the business has actually tricked them into signing a work agreement,” she said.

While many people want to get their homes back to normal in as quick a time as possible, Horton urges residents to obtain at least three bids before making a major decision.

“Don’t just automatically go with the lowest bid…make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. We encourage consumers to ask for references and contact those references,” she said.

The BBB advises homeowners to also work with their insurance company, verify the company’s license and check the company’s history on the Better Business Bureau website.
