FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – MedStar ambulance service is implementing its extreme weather protocol due to a heat index over 105 degrees. MedStar’s Matt Zavadsky says it’s the best way to measure patient discomfort.
“We use the heat index because that’s the real feel. It’s the combination of the ambient temperature combined with the humidity.”
Zavadsky says patients outside will receive a priority response, even if they have a relatively minor injury such as a fall at a kids soccer game.
“If that kiddo is out in 107 degree weather, we’re going to respond to that call with a higher priority so that that kiddo does not now develop a heat related illness.”
The extreme weather protocol remains in effect as long as the heat index remains above 105 degrees.
