LULAC Fundraising for the Uvalde Community Going Strong, Pledges Long-Term Support

SOUTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The League of United Latin American Citizens said donations are pouring into the fund it set up for the families of the victims of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers last Tuesday.

LULAC CEO Sindy Benavides said the #LULACHelps: Uvalde Victims Fund creates a support system for each stage of of recovery.

“From what they’re experiencing right now to long-term access to mental health services as well as access to health care. So many of the families in Uvalde come from low income communities. So many of them are uninsured. We’re looking to alleviate those costs,” she said.

Last Friday, Governor Greg Abbott announced that an anonymous donor paid $175,000 to cover the cost of the funerals which began this week.

It’s a spirit LULAC said its been experiencing since it set up the donation fund the day after tragedy.

Donors from across the nation have been giving anywhere between one dollar to $5,000. Benavides said the money is going directly to the victims, who will need support for years to come.

“We know that we can’t take away the loss the pain of losing a child or a mother or sister but for us it’s about really sending that message that we’re standing with them and this is one way that we can help them,” she said.
