Afghan Refugees in Dallas to Join Their First U.S. Thanksgiving

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Many Afghan refugees who recently re-settled in North Texas will celebrate their first American Thanksgiving on Thursday.

Gateway of Grace Refugee Outreach calls the challenges of re-location immense, but insists the privilege to serve is immeasurable.

“It is their first introduction into a uniquely American holiday,” said Gateway of Grace, Executive Director, Dennis Page. “Thanksgiving is as big as any holiday and this is a way of introducing them to a new culture in a warm and welcoming environment.”

Page said hundreds of refugees will join organizers for a meal this Thanksgiving. Some refugees, from at least 11 other countries, have made the feast a tradition.

In August, the largest U.S. air-lift operation in history evacuated 124,000-plus Afghans, sending U.S. refugee organizations reeling. As Afghan families assigned to Dallas arrive here, Gateway of Grace helps with basic living essentials, language training, jobs, and emotional refuge.
