Transgender Athletes Bill Passes Key Hurdle in Texas House

Texas (WBAP/KLIF) – A bill that would limit transgender student athletes’ participation in sports cleared a key hurdle towards final passage.

Amid emotional testimony from parents of transgender kids, a the Texas House Select Committee on Constitutional Rights & Remedies passed HB-25 along party lines.

A Washington-based transgender advocate testified in Austin on Wednesday. Sarah Warbelow Legal Director with the Human Rights Campaign is a bisexual parent of a transgender daughter. She told the panel, “There is simply no problem posed by inclusive sports programs. Transgender girls like all girls have varying interests in sports.”

The bill stipulates that students play on sports teams that correspond with the sex at birth.

HB-25 was authored by State Rep. Valerie Swanson. During her explanation of the bill, Swanson cited examples of biological girls who lost big competitions against trans-girls.

“Lena Sevard, a student athlete from Texas A&M-Commerce was denied her rightful place a the 2019 Division II Women’s 400 meter hurdle national championship when she was beaten by C.C. Tulfer, a transgender male.”
