Matthew Dowd, Former George W. Bush Strategist, Announces Run for Texas Lt. Governor as Democrat

TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – There’s another contender for the Lieutenant Governor seat in next year’s midterm elections.

Matthew Dowd, former chief strategist for George W. Bush, announced Wednesday morning that he’s running against Dan Patrick as a Democrat.

In his campaign video announcement, Dowd accused Republican leaders of failing the state on energy and COVID-19.

He said Patrick was a divisive figure who puts his political ambitions over the needs of Texans.

“Enough is enough. We need more officials who tell the truth, who believe in public services, in common sense with common decency for the common good,” said Dowd. “Dan Patrick believes in none of those and that is why I am running for the powerful office of lieutenant governor of this great state.”

He’ll have to face Mike Collier in the primaries before the November elections. Collier came within 400,000 votes of unseating Patrick in 2018.

Dowd has worked under both Republican and Democratic leaders. He also worked for Bob Bullock, the last Democrat elected as Texas Lieutenant Governor in 1994.

Patrick, who has been in office since 2014, is running for re-election and has vowed to “keep Texas red.”
