DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Refugee Services of Texas is working work with national refugee resettlement partners and the U.S. government to offer protection and resettlement to hundreds of Afghan Special Immigrant Visa holders and their families who gave everything to help the American military in Afghanistan.

According to RST, all Afghans who have received Special Immigrant Visas have undergone security background checks and health screenings. Between August 1 and August 23, Refugee Services of Texas has welcomed 75 Afghan SIV holders, their spouses, and children. 29 of the refugee families have arrived in  DFW.

“We aren’t all of the resettlement in Texas, but we do about a third of the resettlement in Texas,” said RST CEO, Russell Smith. “So I’d say take my numbers and triple them. But, we have another 84 who are scheduled, and we know there a few hundred more who are kind of in the pipeline for us.”

Smith projects that more than RST will serve at least 150 Afghan refugee families in DFW by the end of September.

“RST continues to need the public’s support in resettling the brave Afghans and their families who are now paying the price of giving our country and our military so much,” said Smith. “We are extraordinarily grateful for the outpouring of support from the public so far and from our tireless volunteers.”
