Paris, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – While the legal battle rages on regarding masking up in Texas schools one district has found a ‘go-around’ to Governor Greg Abbott’s ban on mandates.
Paris Independent School District in far northeast Texas voted this week to make masks part of its dress code.
The school board said in a written statement that it believes the dress code can be used to mitigate communicable health issues.
The district’s general counsel, Dennis J. Eichelbaum, told our media partner WFAA, “Based upon where we stand on the law and what the governor has done so far, we’re acting consistent with the law.”
Reaction was mixed to the decision.
Watch:
Texas Education Code reads: “The Texas governor does not have the authority to usurp the board of trustees’ exclusive power and duty to govern and oversee the management of the public schools of the district,”
School starts today for PISD’s 3,900 students start school today.
