Texas Senate Passes Elections Bill after 15-Hour Filibuster

(Senator Carol Alvarado)

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – The Texas Senate, on Thursday, again passed its version of a Republican-led voting bill.

The Senate passed the bill in the regular session, the first special session, and now the second. But this time around an overnight filibuster delayed the process. In her tennis shoes on the Senate Floor, Democrat Carol Alvarado addressed the bill for 15 hours.

“I think tonight served a purpose that I set out,” said Senator Alvarado. “Which was to shine the light and put the brakes on.”

Shortly after her filibuster ended, the Senate voted to approve the bill.

“After 24 hours straight on the Senate floor, including a 15 hour filibuster, I am very proud that the Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 1 today,” said Texas Lt. Governor, Dan Patrick. “This is the fourth time we have passed this bill out of the Senate.”

Democrats argue the bill is discriminatory but Republicans believe it protects election integrity.

“SB 1 is about ensuring that every Texan trusts the outcome of every election in Texas,” said Patrick. “It increases transparency and ensures the voting rules are the same in every county across the state.”

The bill heads to the house, where Democrats continue to break quorum over it.
